Echo: A New Sculpture was launched on the Trail on Sunday 20th July 2008.
When Annie was first appointed in January 2007 to create a new sculpture for the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, she was given a fairly open brief – to respond to the Forest of Dean. The site was simply the ‘sculpture trail’, although there was a preference to install a new work in an area contained within a triangle of land between Beechenhurst Lodge, Speech House car park and Neville Gabies sculpture, Raw. With eighteen works already scattered around this woodland location, a 4km circular route, we rather felt the world was our oyster – the forest offering up a huge number of choices to which Annie could respond……………come and see Echo soon
Echo was commissioned to commemorate the untimely death of one of the trail founders, Jeremy Rees and we wish to thank the Arnolfini Collections Trust and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for funding this new work. We also wish to thank Bombay Sapphire and the Speech House Hotel for their generous sponsorship. There are many individuals that have contributed to the success of the project and our thanks go to them all.
A catalogue is available with a text by Charles Darwent.
Cattrell was recently selected as joint winner of the Bombay Sapphire Glass Prize. She also had work in a show at the V&A in London in which her work clearly demonstrated her commitment to exploring complex details of structures and light. Echo, Annie’s new sculpture for the Trail, will provide another interpretation of the forest, responding to the geological history and the material nature of the landscape.
Located in, and cast from, Kensley Quarry, Echo nestles opposite its source. Like a 3D photograph, a moment in the life of the 310million year lifetime of pennant sandstone has been frozen in time, every detail is there to discover in the surface of the sculpture.
