Forest Column by Liza Gough Daniels

A temporary artwork commissioned by the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trust, grant aided by the Countryside Agency.

Liza Gough Daniels, who has a studio in the Forest of Dean and in London, says that Forest Column draws attention to the specific natural and planted heritage of the region. The commission was a welcome opportunity to give something back to the Forest community that might reflect the way we experience the internal landscape as part of daily life.

The work forms a series of intimate photographic images of naturally occurring events in the Forest calendar, digitally printed and mounted on aluminium panels and stacked in a column in sympathy with the vertical rhythm of the surrounding trees.
As a temporary commission, it will remain in place for about 18 months.

“I hope that Forest Column will encourage visitors to consider the context within which the Sculpture Trail is located and that attention is drawn to the importance of maintaining and actively improving the diversity of planted and open woodland for the future.”
