Memories of Place Affectionately known as The Giant’s Chair, the sculpture was installed in 1986 and decommissioned in October 2015. "The Sculpture Trail was a regular day out for me and my two best friends with my Mum and Step-Dad and we all have fond memories – especially of my 8th birthday one cold November where we filled our wellies with icy water from a river and did handstands." Jemma Benn "All three of us have strong memories of that day in 1992 – of following the rising trail through the woods and emerging into the open (as it then was) on the crest of the hill where the giant chair stood." Gerry and Rita Cordon "Going out with my dog and my camera was quite therapeutic, so the snow gave me an extra incentive. When I got to Beechenhurst there was a sign saying the Trail was closed. So I had to go in as there wouldn’t be anyone else foolish enough!" Nick Stewart "Now that the reality of the work – and the world – has changed and it (both work and world?) will no longer exist in the same way physically, I wonder if this is the moment when we might need to find the words, not to replace it, but to begin to write and talk about it." Joy Sleeman "Part of the joy of the Trail was the element of fantasy it conjured in a young mind. The Giant’s Chair of course suggested that a King Kong-like figure was hidden in the canopy somewhere waiting for the tourists to disappear so that he could return to his throne." Robin Pierson "Big chair you made an impression / Sun was going down and I felt so small / I got a buzz trying to climb it / And after a short spell levitating / Moved on." Colin Moody "Although it was a November wedding we were incredibly lucky with the weather, though there was a nip in the air – hence the husband lending me his jacket! I can’t believe it was nearly 6 years ago now." Judith Lack "I asked Tom if he wanted to say anything, but he got all tearful and said ‘I’m just really upset that it will be gone really, really soon’!" Alison Congalton "Upon arrival and equipped with a backpack of sandwiches, drinks, pencils, pens, scrappy pad of paper, a journal and DSLR’s which we weren’t completely familiar with using, we were left to be on our way in our own ‘cliques’." Anna Milo "It all looks very different now. I still go every now and then and sometimes I take my grandsons. One of my grandsons is turning 7 soon and I’ll take him for a walk there when I next see him." John Deane "We used to wonder why the huge chair was there and came up with a few possibilities. My favourite was that there was a higher being who used it on one of his/her shifts to look after Gloucestershire." Erin Madden "We first visited the Giant’s Chair in 1986, but as a child, I have no recollection of its installation. For me, it seemed to have been there always, as old as the rocks out of which it grew." Phil Scott "I’ve stood under its shadow every year since it was first erected, through my childhood, teenage years, early adulthood and now as a father myself has given me a real feeling of friendship with this creation. To hear of its coming disappearance from the forest landscape somehow makes the woods an emptier place." Pete Vigurs "I was thinking about a giant sitting in the chair and then. The strangest thing happened. I felt my whole body growing into the size of the chair." Vicky Silver "The giants return for their chair / they take it away out into the forest, / and with no proof it ever existed / did we imagine it?" Stuart Carswell
